How Thai Dress Rental Works

Renting traditional Thai costume at Sabai Thai Dressing takes approximately 15–20 minutes from arrival to departure. The process involves four simple steps.

1

Choose Your Dress

5–10 minutes

Browse the available costumes and select your preferred color and style. Staff can recommend options based on your preferences, skin tone, and planned photo locations. Regular tier includes classic designs; Premium tier features finer fabrics and more elaborate patterns.

2

Get Dressed with Staff Assistance

5–10 minutes

Staff members help you put on the costume correctly. Traditional Thai dress involves multiple components—the sinh (tube skirt), blouse, sabai (shoulder cloth), and accessories—that require proper draping and fastening. Staff ensure everything fits securely for comfortable movement.

3

Explore Chiang Mai

Leave the shop and visit nearby temples, Tha Phae Gate, or other photo locations. The costume is designed for walking and light activity. Staff will explain any care instructions before you depart.

4

Return by 6:30 PM

Return to the shop before the 6:30 PM deadline. Staff will help you change back into your own clothes. Late returns may incur additional fees.

Who Is This Service For?

Regular Thai dress rental serves visitors seeking authentic cultural experiences without the commitment of premium photography packages.

Solo Travelers

Individual visitors wanting Instagram-worthy photos at Chiang Mai's temples and landmarks. The included accessories create a complete look for smartphone photography without additional purchases.

Couples

Partners exploring Chiang Mai together who want matching or complementary traditional outfits. Couples can choose coordinating colors for unified photos at romantic locations like Wat Phra Singh or Tha Phae Gate.

Families with Children

Parents traveling with kids who want family photos in traditional Thai attire. Children's sizes are available, and staff can assist with fitting smaller costumes. The hourly option works well for families with young children who may not tolerate all-day wear.

Budget-Conscious Tourists

Travelers who want the cultural experience of wearing Chut Thai without the cost of full photography packages. Regular rental provides the dress and accessories; you bring your own camera or smartphone.

Temple Visitors

Tourists planning to visit Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang, or other temples in the Old City. Traditional Thai dress meets temple dress codes (covered shoulders and knees) while adding cultural authenticity to the experience.

Where to Take Photos in Your Thai Dress

Chiang Mai's Old Town contains over 40 temples within its historic walls, with hundreds more in the surrounding area. Several iconic locations sit within walking distance of Sabai Thai Dressing.

Customer in Thai costume at Tha Phae Gate — Chiang Mai historic landmark

Tha Phae Gate

5–10 minute walk

The eastern gate of Chiang Mai's Old City serves as the city's most recognizable landmark. Built originally during the Lanna Kingdom period in the 13th century, the current structure dates to a 1985–1986 reconstruction. The brick archway and open plaza provide classic backdrops for Thai dress photos. Morning hours offer softer lighting and fewer crowds.

Wat Phra Singh

10–15 minute walk

Wat Phra Singh, constructed beginning in 1345, showcases classic Lanna architecture with gilded chedis, ornate wooden viharns, and detailed murals. The temple's golden structures create striking contrast with traditional dress colors. Open daily 6:00 AM – 5:00 PM; 40 THB entry fee for main hall.

Wat Chedi Luang

10–15 minute walk

Wat Chedi Luang features a massive 14th-century chedi (pagoda) that once stood 82 meters tall. Though partially damaged by a 16th-century earthquake, the ancient structure provides dramatic backdrops. The temple also houses Chiang Mai's city pillar. Open daily; donation suggested.

Wat Phan Tao

10–15 minute walk

Adjacent to Wat Chedi Luang, this teak wood temple offers darker, more intimate photo settings. The all-wood construction creates unique aesthetic opportunities different from the golden temples.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to book in advance?
Walk-ins are welcome during operating hours (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM daily). Booking in advance is recommended during peak tourist season (November–February) and Thai holidays to ensure dress availability in your preferred color and size.
What sizes are available?
Sabai Thai Dressing stocks costumes for various body types, from petite to plus sizes. Traditional Thai dress involves wrapped and adjustable components that accommodate different measurements. Staff can advise on the best fit during your visit.
Is a deposit required?
A refundable deposit may be required for full-day rentals. The deposit is returned upon return of the costume in good condition by the 6:30 PM deadline. Deposit amount varies; confirm at booking.
Can I visit temples in the rented dress?
Yes. Traditional Thai dress meets temple dress code requirements, which specify covered shoulders and knees. Temples welcome visitors in modest traditional attire. Remove shoes before entering temple buildings as required at all Thai Buddhist temples.
What if I return late?
Returns after the 6:30 PM deadline incur late fees. Contact the shop if you anticipate delays. Severely late returns (after closing) may result in forfeiture of the deposit.
Can children rent costumes?
Yes. Children's sizes are available for most costume styles. Younger children may prefer the hourly rental option. Parents are responsible for supervising children and ensuring costume care.
What should I wear underneath?
Wear comfortable undergarments that won't show through the costume. Strapless or nude-colored items work best. Staff can advise on specific recommendations based on your chosen dress style.
Is the dress authentic Thai silk?
Regular tier costumes use quality synthetic and cotton-blend fabrics suitable for all-day wear in Chiang Mai's climate. Premium tier costumes feature finer materials including silk-blend options. Traditional Thai silk costumes are available through specialty packages.
