View our rental optionsWhat types of Thai traditional costumes do you offer?
Sabai Thai Dressing offers both central Thai costumes (Chut Thai) and Northern Thai Lanna-style costumes. Chut Thai refers to Thailand's national costume, formalized into eight official styles under the guidance of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit in the 1960s. Lanna costumes represent the traditional dress of Northern Thailand, featuring distinctive regional patterns and textiles.
Costume options include:
- Thai Princess styles — Elegant Chut Thai with sabai (shoulder cloth) and pha sin (tube skirt)
- Lanna traditional styles — Northern Thai costumes with regional weaving patterns
- Court-style costumes — More formal options with elaborate embroidery
- Men's traditional Thai outfits — Including Suea Phraratchathan (formal Thai shirt)
- Children's costumes — Scaled versions for young visitors
What is the difference between Chut Thai and Lanna costumes?
Chut Thai is Thailand's national costume, developed from royal court dress with eight standardized styles including Thai Chakri, Thai Dusit, and Thai Siwalai. Lanna costumes originate from Northern Thailand's distinct cultural heritage with regional textile patterns.
Key differences include:
| Aspect | Chut Thai | Lanna Costume |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Central Thailand/Royal Court | Northern Thailand (Lanna Kingdom) |
| Textiles | Thai silk, often brocade | Regional handwoven fabrics |
| Patterns | Formal, standardized designs | Distinctive Northern weaving styles |
| Style | Sabai draped over shoulder | Regional variations in wrapping style |
Both costume types are appropriate for temple visits and photography in Chiang Mai.
Do you have costumes for men?
Traditional Thai costumes for men include the formal Suea Phraratchathan shirt paired with chong kraben (wrapped lower garment) or formal trousers. Male costumes are available in multiple sizes and include all accessories.
Men's costume sets include a traditional Thai shirt, lower garment, belt, and complementary accessories. Couples can rent coordinating outfits for matching photoshoots.
Browse our galleryDo you have costumes for children?
Children's Thai costumes are available starting from approximately age 3. Scaled-down versions maintain traditional design elements while accommodating younger visitors. Child-sized accessories are included with each rental.
Families can coordinate outfits across all ages for group photographs at temples or our vintage car photoshoot location. Staff assist with fitting and adjustments for younger guests.
Sizing & Fit
What sizes are available for Thai dress rental?
Costumes accommodate body measurements from XS through XXL, with adjustable components for most body types. Traditional Thai dress construction uses wrap-and-tie techniques allowing flexibility in fit.
The pha sin (tube skirt) adjusts at the waist through folding and belting. Upper garments and sabai drape to accommodate different body shapes. Staff assist with fitting and make adjustments during your visit to ensure proper costume presentation.
Do you accommodate plus sizes?
Costumes accommodate a range of body types through traditional construction methods. The wrap-style design of Thai dress allows adjustment beyond standard Western sizing. Contact us with your measurements if you have sizing concerns before booking.
- Bust/chest circumference
- Waist measurement
- Hip measurement
Staff work with guests during fitting to ensure comfortable and attractive costume presentation regardless of body type.
What should I wear underneath the Thai costume?
Wear nude or skin-tone undergarments beneath traditional Thai costumes. Strapless bras work best with sabai-style costumes that leave one shoulder exposed. Seamless underwear prevents visible lines under the fitted pha sin skirt.
- Strapless or convertible bra in nude/skin tone
- Seamless underwear
- No dark-colored undergarments (visible through some fabrics)
Avoid wearing your own jewelry to the appointment, as costume accessories are included and selected to complement each outfit.
Will the costume fit me if I'm pregnant?
Traditional Thai dress construction accommodates pregnancy through adjustable waist wrapping. The pha sin skirt wraps below or above the belly as comfortable. Contact us before booking to discuss your stage of pregnancy and preferred fitting approach.
Staff have experience fitting costumes for pregnant guests. Certain costume styles work better during pregnancy—we recommend options that photograph well while maintaining comfort.

Rental Duration & Return
How long is the rental period?
Rental options include hourly rental and full-day rental. Hourly rentals suit quick photoshoots at nearby locations. Full-day rentals run from your pickup time until 6:30 PM the same day, allowing temple tours and extended photography sessions.
| Rental Type | Duration | Best For |

What is the best time of day for outdoor photography?
Early morning (8:00–10:00 AM) and late afternoon (4:00–5:30 PM) provide optimal lighting for outdoor photography in Chiang Mai. Midday sun creates harsh shadows unflattering for costume photography. Golden hour light enhances traditional Thai silk fabrics.
- Soft, warm lighting
- Fewer tourists in backgrounds
- Cooler temperatures for comfort
Late afternoon provides similar lighting quality with temples typically less crowded than mid-morning.

Can I visit temples wearing Thai traditional dress?
Traditional Thai dress is appropriate and respectful attire for temple visits. Thai costumes meet temple dress codes requiring covered shoulders and knees. Temples welcome visitors wearing traditional clothing as it demonstrates cultural appreciation.
- Shoulders covered by sabai or blouse
- Knees covered by pha sin (extends to ankles)
- Modest, respectful appearance
Wearing Thai costume at temples often receives positive responses from local worshippers.
What is the dress code for visiting temples in Chiang Mai?
Thai temples require visitors to cover shoulders and knees as a sign of respect. Sleeveless tops, shorts, miniskirts, and revealing clothing are not permitted. Traditional Thai costumes exceed these requirements.
- Temple dress code rules:
- ✓Cover shoulders completely
- ✓Cover knees (pants, long skirts, or traditional dress)
- ✓Remove shoes before entering temple buildings
- ✓Remove hats and sunglasses inside temples
- ✗No sleeveless tops or tank tops
- ✗No shorts or miniskirts
- ✗No see-through clothing
Some stricter temples like Bangkok's Grand Palace require ankle coverage and do not accept scarves as shoulder coverings—traditional Thai dress meets these stricter standards.
What temple etiquette should I follow?
Buddhist temple etiquette in Thailand requires respectful behavior in addition to appropriate dress. Following these customs shows respect for Thai culture and practicing Buddhists.
- Remove shoes — Before entering any temple building
- Never point feet at Buddha — Sit with feet tucked behind you or to the side
- Don't touch Buddha images — Maintain respectful distance
- Keep head below Buddha level — Don't climb or pose higher than Buddha statues
- Speak quietly — Temples are active worship spaces
- No public displays of affection — Inappropriate in religious settings
- Ask before photographing worshippers — Respect privacy during prayers
Women should never touch Buddhist monks. Offerings to monks must be placed down for the monk to pick up rather than handed directly.
Can I take photos inside temples?
Photography rules vary by temple. Exterior photography is generally permitted at all temples. Interior photography may be restricted in worship areas—look for posted signs indicating camera or phone restrictions.
- Exterior buildings and grounds: Usually permitted
- Interior worship halls: Check posted rules; flash often prohibited
- Buddha images: No posing with backs to Buddha; no selfies with Buddha
- Worshippers: Ask permission before including people in photos
- Ceremonies: Do not photograph without permission
Respect any posted prohibitions even if other tourists ignore them.

Weather & Best Time to Visit
What is the best season for Thai dress photography in Chiang Mai?
The cool season (November through February) offers optimal conditions for Thai dress photography in Chiang Mai. Temperatures range from 15°C to 28°C with clear skies and low humidity. This period provides comfortable conditions for outdoor photography and temple visits.
| Season comparison: | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| Season | Months | Temperature | Photography Conditions |
| Cool | Nov–Feb | 15–28°C | Excellent — Clear, comfortable |
| Hot | Mar–May | 30–40°C | Challenging — Heat, some haze |
| Rainy | Jun–Oct | 25–32°C | Variable — Afternoon showers |
December and January are peak cool season with temperatures dropping to 12–15°C at night.
Can I rent Thai dress during the hot season?
Thai dress rental is available year-round. Hot season (March–May) requires adjusted planning with outdoor photography recommended during early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are lower.
- Temperatures reach 35–40°C midday
- Air-conditioned preparation area available
- Morning photography (before 10 AM) recommended
- Carry water during outdoor activities
- Lightweight makeup adjustments for humidity
What about the burning season?
The burning season occurs from late February through April when agricultural burning affects air quality in Northern Thailand. Air Quality Index (AQI) readings frequently exceed 150 (unhealthy) during this period, with some days reaching hazardous levels above 300.
- Visible haze reducing scenic backgrounds
- Poor visibility of distant temple spires and mountains
- Health concerns for sensitive individuals
Consider scheduling visits outside February–April if air quality is a concern. Southern Thailand and other regions offer alternative destinations during this period if you're traveling specifically for photography.
What happens if it rains during my rental?
Rainy season (June–October) brings afternoon showers, typically lasting 1–2 hours. Morning photography often remains dry during rainy season. Indoor backup locations exist if weather interrupts outdoor plans.
- Photograph at covered temple areas
- Wait for showers to pass (usually brief)
- Reschedule outdoor portion if severe weather
Staff monitor weather and can advise on timing. Traditional Thai silk should avoid direct rain exposure—we provide guidance on protecting your costume during inclement weather.

Handle costumes carefully, especially when eating, drinking, or sitting. Traditional Thai silk requires gentle treatment.

Water is generally safe with careful handling. Remove or protect costume components if eating is necessary.
